One Little Word

My first though for this year was FRUGAL, which means avoiding waste but is almost always associated with money.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Money certainly came into play when I thought about frugal being my one little word. But it’s not just about money. It’s about everything, time, resources, habits, work, etc

Knowing that most people see frugal and think “oh so you’ve come over all cheap this year” (Which we so have not done. We spent Jan 1 afternoon going over our budget & immediately had our normal reaction of an overwhelming desire to go out to dinner, which we naturally gave into but being frugal we didn’t order dessert) I decided to find a better, more rounded synonym.

I found these:

Spartan, abstemious, careful, chary, conserving, discreet, meager, meticulous, mingy, niggardly, parsimonious, penny-pinching, penny-wise, preserving, provident, prudent, saving, scrimping, sparing, stingy, temperate, thrifty, tight, tightwad, unwasteful, wary

Most seemed more money related but a few had promise.

ABSTEMIOUS – marked by restraint especially in the consumption of food or alcohol; also reflecting such restraint

I like the sound of it, the way it flows. But it mostly applies to food & people who gloss over words think it’s ABSTINANCE & think I’ve given up sex for the year.

Not to mention I can’t be relied on to spell abstemious correctly on an ongoing basis.

TEMPERATE -  marked by moderation, a : keeping or held within limits : not extreme or excessive : mild; b : moderate in indulgence of appetite or desire c : moderate in the use of alcoholic beverages d : marked by an absence or avoidance of extravagance, violence, or extreme partisanship

Better, I suppose, but not quite what I had in mind. Makes me think of teetotalers & prohibition.

PROVIDENT -  1.having or showing foresight; providing carefully for the future. 2. characterized by or proceeding from foresight. 3. mindful in making provision (usually followed by of  ). 4.economical; frugal; thrifty.

No, too future thinking. Doesn’t quite fit either.

Then I came across this one

CANNY -   1.careful; cautious; prudent: a canny reply. 2. astute; shrewd; knowing; sagacious: a canny negotiator. 3. skilled; expert. 4. frugal; thrifty: a canny housewife.

A canny housewife.

BINGO!

And thus my one little word came about.

I am going to be canny this year.

And I can say it in a Scottish accent which just adds to the overall rightness of it.

oh yes canny is great for you – around here always said as a compliment with definate overtones of clever and caring

  • Yes, it’s a compliment in Ulster-Scots too. Best of luck with it!

  • Doing some catch up reading tonight . . . loved your Christmas pages (especially the one in the tree shape) and the trip through your memory box was a hoot. I have one of those stuck in a closet somewhere.
And your word! Your word! It is unique and perfect for you! I love it.

  • Canny is a compliment in Yankee-Scots too, I remember being called it by my Granddad ;)

Glad you could find a word and yeah some of the others could cause confusion.
