Um… Dude, I don’t think… She’s just a bit… I mean…You’re kind of… and she’s sort of… and it’s just not… I don’t see how…

We need to get some female figures. I’ve looked but let’s face it the only women in the Star Wars universe are Amidala & Ahsoka Tano in the first half and Leia and Mon Mothma in the second. We have Ahsoka, but the clones have shown zero interest in her. I’m not even sure where she is these days. I thought we had Leia too but again…can’t find her and I’m pretty sure Han would shoot anyone who hit on her. I can’t find Leia in the stores anywhere & haven’t ever seen Mon Mothma. Sometimes I run across a single Amidala figure but she is always so overdressed I can’t see her joining in the dino battles etc.

I decided to see what other women might be out there. I thought Hey the Avengers movie just came out and they had a female character! And look there are Avenger action figures! Let’s get the Black Widow, she’d fit in perfectly.

Except there is no Black Widow figures. none. nada. zip. zero. Oh she exists on Amazon, but apparently she is so rare that instead of costing $8.99 like the males, she is $29.99.

I feel bad for the clones, but not THAT bad.

Moving on into the other super hero action figures there were no women there either, though I swear I recall one named Wonder Woman once existed in the super hero universe. No Supergirl, no Batgirl, no Catwoman, no Poison Ivy.  There weren’t even any women in need of rescue figures, which is terribly stereotyping but by this point I’d take anything.

I suppose this is because manufacturers are sexist and assume 1. only boys play with action figures and 2. boys would not play with female ones.

Not that they are alone in this.

Have you been down the Wall of Pinkness that is the girls’ toys aisle? Disney fairy dolls. Disney Princess figures. Barbie dolls. Mermaid dolls. And in one small non-pink area, down at the end of the aisle, the doll ghetto as it were, are 3 Monster High dolls.  Sadly they too are too tall for the clones.

Action figure gender imbalance,

Not something I ever thought I would worry about.

I remember when my nephew was really into Xmen he adored Jane Grey but we never found a doll of her – it would have made him so happy to have her as well as cyclops and wolverine

  • What an interesting observation – my kids were never very into action figures (and the girl just briefly into Barbies and Bratz dolls). We had lots and lots of small plastic animals, though.

  • My daughter got a Barbie set with little sister Kelly and the little boy doll dressed as Catwoman and Batman. My son played with them more than she did! He’s always upset when he can’t find the female characters for a series. One of his favorite Star Wars the Clone Wars figures is a female bounty hunter.

you used to be able to get Catwoman (back in the day!), but I think she may have been too tall for your needs!
