The chicken gang has found a new height from which to stare into the kitchen.

They will remain there until the windows get installed & gods only know when that will happen.

Permit issues have delayed construction on the thingy we are putting on the porch.

I now call it a ‘thingy’ because apparently correct terminology is very important to permits.

A ‘mud room’ is one kind of construction & has certain regulations. A ‘screen porch’ is another with different rules. A ‘covered porch’ is still another.

We’ve been calling it a mud room, but meeting covered porch criteria.

Because technically, based on what we plan on using it for, it is a covered porch by county standards. By referring to it as a mud room when the county assessor came by to make their 7 year appraisal I inadvertently opened up a can of worms we are still trying to stuff back in the can.

To me a covered porch is a porch with a roof, not an enclosed room.

Are we going to use it for storage?  Well, we are planning on leaving our shoes out there…does that count?

Will it have electricity?  Well, there are existing soffit lights that have to be incorporated just by design… does that count?

Will it be useable year round? Well, like I said…a bench to take off shoes…does that count?

Are you going to insulate it? Absolutely not. I just want, you know, a place for muddy shoes & stuff that is not my small kitchen…a um, mud room as it were…but not, you know, a mud room mud room, just a sort of muddy stuff room thingy…and a wind break so icy or really hot air doesn’t blow into the house.

So you are going to have windows, not just screens? um…yeah, but really cheap windows that leak around the edges and let in a draft, not double hung insulated windows or anything. Not the sort of windows you’d put in a real room you were planning on using as a real room, just in an enclosed space for taking off your muddy stuff and leaving footballs & other sports junk. Temporarily. Not permanently leave it, like for storage, just leave it when you come in to play Wii for a couple hours, not you know…actual storage storage…

This project is so cursed
